New Moon Midwifery

» About New Moon - Two decades of dedication to homebirth care.

New Moon Midwifery began in Ann Arbor in 1987, providing the homebirth community with reliable and skilled midwifery services and support. Over the years, midwives at New Moon Midwifery have assisted with the births of hundreds of babies, to clients of all walks of life, in their homes, respectfully and according to their individual needs and wishes. The midwives of New Moon Midwifery have trained many apprentice midwives, and the practice itself has been handed down from midwife to midwife through the years. We have attended births for mothers whose ages range from 18 to late-40’s, for those having their first babies as well as their 9th or 10th, and for mothers planning first or subsequent homebirth after Cesarean (VBAC/HBAC). Assisting with waterbirth and the unique environment it creates is an important part of our practice.

Amanda A. Howell,
Certified Professional Midwife

Amanda has felt called to attend birth since her childhood. Before becoming a midwife, she completed a Master’s degree and worked as a medical and biological illustrator. She joined New Moon Midwifery in 2000. Amanda has been a Certified Professional Midwife since 2004. She also served as President of the Michigan Midwives Association from 2006-08, and is currently an active board member.

Amanda Topping,
Certified Professional Midwife

As the mother of three wonderful children, all of whom entered the world with the loving help of midwives, Amanda understands the passionate, intimate nature of giving birth and how vital it is for the mother, child and family to feel safe, comfortable and in control. In 2001 she entered the childbirth profession as a doula, supporting women birthing in a hospital setting, then trained as an apprentice midwife with New Moon Midwifery before becoming a CPM in 2007. Amanda is currently a board member with the Michigan Midwives Association.

Midwives-in-Training

The New Moon team includes the priceless support of an apprentice midwife-in-training: Jamie Eidsath. Clients typically meet all of the New Moon team during one or more prenatal visits. One or both midwives and at least one apprentice attend each birth.

Fellowship with Midwives in the Community

We are fortunate to share our calling with other skilled homebirth midwives in the community. In the event of travel, an illness, accident, or multiple births happening at once, there are a number of options available for qualified backup midwives.

We try to empower women and provide a safe space for them to do
what they know how to do. We feel very fortunate to do this work.”
